Maple Lodge Farms Ltd. plans to open a $46 million poultry processing plant in Kentville, Nova Scotia, by spring 2012, Canadian media reported.
The facility, which will process both chickens and turkeys, is expected to fill a void left by the closure of the Maple Leaf Foods plant in Canard, Nova Scotia, in 2007.
The Kentville plant will be jointly owned by Maple Lodge Farms and farmers from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island who will ship their birds to the new facility, the Canadian Press reported.
The new operation will have the capacity to process about 12,000 chickens per hour and 2,500 turkeys per hour, Ian Blenkharn, chairman of the Nova Scotia poultry industry strategic planning committee, told Nova Scotia’s Chronicle-Herald newspaper.
Maple Lodge Farms employs about 2,200 people and operates a primary/further processing facility in Brampton, Ontario, a primary processing facility in St. Francois, New Brunswick, a hen processing facility in New Market, Virginia, and operations in Etobicoke, Ontario, that include a cook plant, hatcheries, feed mills and laboratory.
