Prices rising even further in New Zealand

Print
Federated Farmers in New Zealand predict that more food price rises are on expected for the near future, with grain prices anticipated to rise a further 60% in 2009.
Grain and Feed Council chair Andrew Gillanders warns that grain farmers face big increases for fuel and fertilisers, which are feeding into price rises for eggs, poultry and pork, reports Radio New Zealand News.
Added to the pressure for competition for biofuels, Gillanders says that flooding across American mid-west has worsened an already bad situation.
He questions whether poultry farmers, amongst others in the agricultural sector, will be able to make profits when up against such obstacles. In poultry farming, grain comprises 60% to 70% of costs, says the Poultry Industry Association.
