World Egg Day on 9 October attracted health professionals and consumers to celebrate the big benefits that come from such a unique package - the egg.
From its beginnings in 1996, World Egg Day has grown in stature and spread around the globe, reports the International Egg Commission (IEC). It is now celebrated with special events in an ever-increasing number of countries from the Australia to China, Americas to Mongolia, and all over Europe.
Each year, the big day is celebrated in great style, but always with great fun and interest unique to the individual country.
Some of the things IEC members have done this year to celebrate the wonderful egg were:
• New Zealand has held a national cook-off to find the country's fastest omelette maker.
• Hungary held its annual 3-day egg festival in Siofok; there were drawing competitions, recipes contests, and even an "Egg-Ball" where people danced into the evening.
• In the U.S. the American Egg Board launched its Good Egg Project, encouraging people to "eat good and do good".
• Spain launched its Good Egg Book, 180 pages of fabulous photographs and egg facts.
