Frozen meat products from Brazil are one of the main import sectors benefitting greatly of late from China's annual economic growth rate of 10 percent. A trade mission by Brazilian officials last week led to promises of rapid growth for Brazilian meat exports to China, and major processor Marfrig announced an investment of more than US$300 million in two joint ventures with Chinese companies, according to Agencia Estado newswire.
China is already the main buyer of a wide variety of Brazilian agricultural products, including soybeans, wood products, sugar, ethanol, beef and chicken. Over the past three years, sales of those ag products to China grew an average of 214 percent.
China imported 128,000 tons of poultry meat from Brazil last year, compared to 28,000 tons in 2009. According to Brazil's poultry processors union, Ubabef, Chinese officials are now indicating they'll soon authorize the purchase of poultry from 41more Brazilian meat processors, in addition to the 24 processing plants already authorized to export to China.
