Lutein feed additive makes eggs healthier

Print

2409-CASCINA-IT-egg_procNew research from CaroTech® in Spain shows that feeding of quails with increase levels of Xamacol® 40 led to linear increases in lutein in the egg yolk.

Lutein-rich Xamacol® 40 from Carotenoid Technologies S.A. (CaroTech®) is traditionally used in chicken feed to provide the yellow colour of broiler chicken skin and hen eggs but lutein may lead to improved human eye health, in particular, by reducing the risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The study showed that lutein can be deposited in eggs up to 55 mg/kg. The company sees potential for these type of “designer eggs” that brings both benefits for animals and humans.
