Wastewater treatment: egg processors can benefit from new value-added treatment process developed by Sanovo Environmental Solutions

SANOVO ENGINEERINGA new wastewater treatment solution tailored to the egg processing industry is dispelling the notion that wastewater treatment is synonymous with flushing money down the drain. This innovative customized solution enables egg processors to create a product instead of sludge and the high sludge disposal costs remaining after treatment in conventional treatment systems are thereby eliminated. At the same time, wastewater discharge costs are significantly reduced. Moreover, engaging in environmental-friendlier production processes is also an advantage in today’s society, where many big retailers and food companies only purchase environment-friendly products to enable consumers to opt for less polluting products.

During the past years, concerns about the environment have caused authorities around the world to adopt stricter environmental regulations. This can also be felt in the egg processing industry where costs for wastewater discharge have increased considerably. Egg processors who are out of compliance are paying high costs to municipalities to be able to discharge the wastewater and plants, which choose to install or upgrade their own treatment system, will thus profit from a good economic payback on such projects.
The new solution, developed by the Danish environmental consulting company, Sanovo Environmental Solutions, is based on coagulation. In wastewater from egg processing plants, the majority of the pollution derives from the egg loading and breaking activity. The water is treated by removing the non-degraded egg materials remaining in the process water after loading and breaking without using any chemicals to coagulate the water. The system enables a reduction of the COD in the outlet water of 70-90%. As no chemicals are added to the system, the remaining egg fraction constitutes a valuable product and can be sold to the agricultural industry, for instance as animal feed ingredient. In this way the egg processors will be able to generate in income from on the sales of the egg mass. The entire non-chemical treatment plant is pre-assembled, and installed in a 40-feet container. It only requires the necessary pipe connections so installation costs are thereby minimal.
The first plant of its kind has been tested at the egg processing plant Sanovo Foods in Denmark.
“We always look for the best solutions to uphold production in an environmentally-friendly way”, said Henrik Pedersen, CEO of the Sanovo Egg Group, and continues: “This new wastewater system helps egg processors eliminate wastewater surcharges and is better than conventional systems both environmentally and economically speaking. Having a product to sell in stead of sludge to discharge makes excellent economic sense”.
